For twenty years, eCommerce worked one way: a shopper searched, clicked a link, browsed your store and checked out. In 2026 a new path is opening up. Shoppers ask an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to find the right product, and the assistant compares options and can increasingly complete the purchase too. This is agentic commerce, and Shopify merchants are closer to it than most.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
An AI agent is software that acts on a user's behalf instead of just answering questions. In shopping, the agent takes a request such as "waterproof trail running shoes under $150, wide fit, delivered by Friday", searches product catalogues, weighs reviews, price and delivery, and returns a shortlist. Sometimes it checks out as well.
For the merchant, the "visit" may never touch your theme. The agent reads your structured product data: titles, attributes, variants, stock, price, shipping and return policies. If that data is thin or inconsistent, the agent simply recommends someone else.
The Protocols Behind It
Agents need a standard way to talk to stores. Two open protocols lead in 2026:
| Protocol | Backed by | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google and Shopify, with retail and payments partners | Lets agents in Google AI Mode and Gemini discover products and hand off or complete checkout |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI and Stripe | Connects merchants to ChatGPT shopping. Purchases now commonly complete on the merchant's own checkout |
Shopify's answer is Agentic Storefronts. Products from the Shopify Catalog are syndicated to AI channels, so merchants don't have to integrate each protocol themselves. Eligibility and checkout support still vary by channel and buyer country, so check your Sales channels settings in Shopify admin for what applies to your store.
7 Steps to Make Your Shopify Store Agent-Ready
- Fix product titles. Use the format Brand + Product type + key attribute (e.g. "Nordvik Merino Wool Hiking Socks, Cushioned"). Agents match on plain language, not clever names.
- Fill every attribute. Use Shopify's standard product taxonomy and category metafields: material, size, colour, compatibility, care. Missing attributes get you filtered out of comparisons.
- Write descriptions that answer questions. Who is it for, what problem does it solve, and how does it compare? Agents quote this context when they explain a recommendation.
- Keep price and stock accurate in real time. An agent that sends a shopper to an out-of-stock variant loses trust in your catalogue.
- Publish clear shipping and return policies. Delivery speed and free returns are among the first things agents compare.
- Collect reviews on your products. Ratings and review text are strong signals in AI recommendations.
- Add Product structured data. Valid
Product,OfferandMerchantReturnPolicyschema helps both Google and AI crawlers understand your pages.
What Changes for Marketing?
In classic search you compete for clicks. With agents you compete to be chosen. That means:
- Data quality becomes a growth lever. Product feed optimisation was a Google Shopping task. Now it decides every AI channel.
- Brand still matters. When people ask an assistant for a brand by name, the agent can only find you if you are well known. Content, PR and reviews feed that.
- Attribution gets harder. Watch for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com in GA4, and tag orders from Shopify's AI channels where you can.
Where to Start This Week
Export your products and audit the 20 that sell best. Check each title, description, attribute set, image alt text and variant stock. That one audit usually turns up most of the gaps an AI agent would trip over. Then fix your Shopify SEO foundations because the same clean structure serves Google and AI assistants alike.
