Search is splitting in two. Shoppers still type queries into Google, but more and more of them get their answer from an AI Overview, Google's AI Mode, ChatGPT or Perplexity before they click anything. If your store isn't the source those answers cite, you're invisible for that search. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of fixing that.

GEO vs SEO: SEO earns you a ranked link. GEO earns you a mention or citation inside an AI-generated answer. The good news is that about 80% of the work overlaps.

How AI Search Engines Choose What to Recommend

Large language models assemble answers from sources they can crawl, parse and trust. For product questions they favour pages that:

  • State facts plainly (specs, prices, sizes, materials, who the product is for)
  • Use structured data the engine can read without guessing
  • Are corroborated elsewhere: reviews, comparison articles, forums, press
  • Answer the follow-up questions a buyer would ask next

The eCommerce GEO Checklist

AreaWhat to doWhy AI engines care
Product pagesLead with a one-paragraph plain summary: what it is, who it's for, the key specEasy to quote verbatim in an answer
Structured dataProduct, Offer, AggregateRating (from genuine reviews), MerchantReturnPolicy, FAQPageMachine-readable facts with no ambiguity
Collection pagesAdd 150–300 words of buying guidance above or below the gridGives context for "best X for Y" prompts
Comparison contentHonest "X vs Y" and "best for" articles on your blogMatches how people actually prompt AI
Crawl accessDon't block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended in robots.txt unless you mean toBlocked pages can't be cited
Off-site signalsReviews, Reddit and forum mentions, niche media, marketplace listingsAI engines cross-check claims across sources

Write for Prompts, Not Just Keywords

A Google query might be "vegan protein powder". The same shopper asks ChatGPT: "What's the best vegan protein powder for someone with a sensitive stomach that doesn't taste chalky?" Your content needs to answer the long, specific version. Practical ways to do it:

  1. Mine your customer service tickets, reviews and site search for real questions.
  2. Turn the top 10 into FAQ sections on the relevant product and collection pages.
  3. Write a short blog guide for any question that needs more than two paragraphs.
  4. Use clear H2 headings phrased as questions, so engines can lift the answer cleanly.
Avoid the shortcuts: invented statistics, fake reviews and self-awarded star ratings can get your rich results removed by Google, and AI engines increasingly cross-check claims. Only publish numbers you can back up.

How to Measure GEO

Measurement is still immature, but you can track a lot today:

  • GA4 referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Create a custom channel group called "AI Assistants".
  • Prompt tracking: each month, run 20 buyer prompts for your category in each assistant and log whether you're mentioned or cited.
  • Search Console: watch for impressions rising while clicks stay flat on informational queries. That usually means an AI Overview is answering above you.

GEO sits on top of good technical SEO. Fast pages, clean crawlable HTML and correct canonical tags are still the price of entry. If your store's foundations need work, see our Shopify SEO service and speed optimisation pages.
