Shopify Speed Optimization
A slow Shopify store rarely has one big problem. It has dozens of small ones: an oversized hero image, three apps loading similar code, a review widget that shoves the page down as it loads, a mega menu that renders hundreds of products. Our Shopify speed optimization service finds them, fixes them in order of impact and proves the result with field data from real shoppers, not just a lab score.
We target sub-2-second load times and passing Shopify Core Web Vitals on the templates that earn your revenue: home, collection, product and cart.
Shopify brands we've worked with
Google assesses Core Web Vitals with field data: real Chrome visits collected in the Chrome UX Report and judged at the 75th percentile over a rolling 28 days. Lab tools such as Lighthouse simulate a single load on a throttled device. Lab scores are great for debugging, but a store can score poorly in Lighthouse and still pass Core Web Vitals, or the other way round.
So we use both: field data from PageSpeed Insights, Search Console and the web performance report in your Shopify admin, and lab traces to find causes. Success means the field numbers move.
Many apps add scripts and styles to every page, whether that page uses the feature or not. Overlapping apps often load similar code twice.
Uninstalling an app does not always remove what it added. Older apps injected snippets into theme files that keep loading long after you cancel. Apps built on theme app extensions are removed cleanly.
Full-size uploads sent to phones, hero images lazy-loaded when they should load first, and missing dimensions that cause layout shift.
Nested loops over collections, menus that render hundreds of products and logic repeated in every product card slow the server response before the browser gets anything.
Chat widgets, heatmaps, tag managers, testing tools and ad pixels compete for the main thread, which is what drags INP down on mid-range phones.
Some feature-packed themes ship large JavaScript bundles, sliders and animations on every page. Tuning can only go so far on that foundation.
Often more than anything else. Shopify's reference themes such as Dawn are built with minimal JavaScript, while some premium themes load sliders, animation libraries and quick-view scripts everywhere. Before tuning, we check whether the theme is the ceiling.
If it is, we say so and compare the cost of more tuning with a rebuild through custom Shopify theme development. Headless storefronts on Hydrogen can be very fast, but they are not automatically faster than a well-built Liquid theme and cost more to run, so for most brands we fix the theme first.
Speed matters because mobile shoppers abandon pages that stall, and because Core Web Vitals feed into Google's page experience signals. We are careful not to promise rankings or revenue from speed alone, though: it removes friction, it does not replace a good offer.
What you get is a before-and-after report for each key template, with field metrics, lab traces and every change listed. Speed work pairs naturally with Shopify CRO, since tests on fast pages are easier to trust, and with Shopify SEO services for technical issues beyond performance.
Speed decays. Each new app, campaign banner, pixel and homepage section adds weight, and a fixed store can drift back within months. We hand over a short performance budget covering image sizes, app approvals and where new scripts belong, and recheck field data once a full 28-day window has passed. On a Shopify maintenance retainer, those checks can become part of the monthly routine.
Our Process
Got Questions?
It depends on where the time is going. Stores slowed by leftover app code, oversized images or heavy third-party scripts usually improve substantially, while a store limited by its theme has a lower ceiling without a rebuild. We set expectations after the audit, aim for sub-2-second load times on key templates, and report with real-user field data rather than a single lab score.
They measure different things. The headline PageSpeed Insights score is a Lighthouse lab test of one simulated load on a slow device. Shopify's web performance report and the Core Web Vitals section of PageSpeed Insights reflect real visitors. Google relies on field data for Core Web Vitals, so that is what we optimize, using the lab score as a diagnostic tool.
Not if it is done carefully. We map what each app does, check whether Shopify now covers the feature natively or another installed app already does it, and test removals on a duplicate theme first. Before uninstalling, we note which theme files the app touched so leftover code can be cleaned out safely. Nothing is removed from your live store without your approval.
Yes, but modestly. Core Web Vitals are part of the page experience signals Google uses, and relevance and content quality still matter far more. The bigger payoff is usually commercial, because faster and more stable pages are easier to shop, especially on mobile. We treat speed as one part of technical SEO rather than a shortcut to rankings.
Small fixes, such as compressing a hero image or removing dead app code, are typically turned around in 48-72 hours. A full pass across every key template takes longer and is scoped after the audit, depending on the number of apps and scripts involved. Because field data uses a rolling 28-day window, the full effect appears in Search Console a few weeks after publishing.
No, and be wary of anyone who does. A lab score can be inflated with tricks such as delaying every script until the first interaction, which can break tracking and features without helping real shoppers. Instead, we optimize for what real visitors experience and show you field data before and after, including anything your theme or apps still hold back.
