Custom Shopify Apps

Shopify App Development Built Around How You Sell

Most Shopify stores don't need a custom app. The ones that do usually know it already: five App Store subscriptions held together with automation tools, a discount rule nothing on the market supports, or an operations team copying orders into a spreadsheet every morning. Skill Align builds custom Shopify apps and public apps on Shopify's current stack, from the GraphQL Admin API to Shopify Functions and theme and checkout extensions, so they keep working through platform updates.

We build metafield tools, subscription logic, checkout customizations and AI features. One AI upsell widget we built raised a client's average order value by 34% within 60 days.

Custom App or Public App: Which Do You Need?

Custom app

Built for one store, or the stores in one Plus organization, and installed directly without App Store review. Ideal for ERP, 3PL and warehouse integrations, internal admin tools and business rules that are your competitive edge. You control the roadmap, and there is no monthly subscription that grows with your order volume.

Public app

Distributed through the Shopify App Store to many merchants. It has to pass Shopify's app review, charge through the Billing API, implement the mandatory privacy webhooks and meet performance standards. We build multi-tenant data separation and a review-ready listing in from the start.

No app at all

Sometimes the right answer is a theme section driven by metafields, a Shopify Flow workflow, or better configuration of an app you already pay for. We'll say so during scoping rather than sell you a build you don't need.

Theme app extensions

App blocks and app embeds that merchants place in the theme editor. Nothing is injected into theme files, so changing themes or uninstalling the app leaves no broken code behind.

Checkout UI extensions

Custom fields, upsell offers, delivery messaging and loyalty widgets built with Shopify's checkout components, so they inherit your branding. Thank-you and order status page extensions work on every plan; in-checkout steps need Shopify Plus.

Shopify Functions

Backend logic Shopify runs during cart and checkout: custom discounts, delivery and payment method rules, cart and checkout validation, and bundle cart transforms. It runs on Shopify's infrastructure, not in the shopper's browser.

Admin API & webhooks

Integrations on the GraphQL Admin API (REST is now legacy), driven by order, inventory and customer webhooks with HMAC verification, idempotent processing and retry handling, so a duplicate event never creates a duplicate shipment.

Embedded admin apps

Tools that live inside the Shopify admin using App Bridge and Polaris, scaffolded with Shopify CLI, so your team never has to log in to a separate dashboard.

AI features

Product recommendations, upsell logic, support chatbots and content tools powered by large language models, called from the app's server so API keys never touch theme code.

When Does a Custom Shopify App Beat Stacking App Store Apps?

App Store apps are the right default: cheap to start, maintained by someone else and quick to install. The math changes as you grow. Each app adds a monthly fee, often tiered by orders, its own scripts on your storefront and its own copy of your data. A custom build starts to make sense when one or more of these is true:

Subscriptions, Metafield Tools and Other Custom Logic

Subscription logic. Shopify's selling plans and subscription contracts let a custom app handle what off-the-shelf subscription apps can't: build-a-box rules, prepaid plans that ship monthly, skip and swap windows tied to your production calendar, or member pricing based on subscription status. Contracts and vaulted payment methods stay inside Shopify, and renewal orders reach fulfillment like any other order.

Metafield and metaobject tools. Bulk editors and import pipelines for specs, size charts, ingredients or compatibility data, with definitions and validation so the theme renders them reliably and a typo can't break a template.

Operations glue. Order tagging, split-fulfillment rules, B2B approval steps and syncs with ERP, PIM or 3PL systems. Where Shopify Flow can do the job, we use it; where it can't, the app adds custom Flow triggers and actions so your team can still adjust workflows without a developer. It also pairs well with Shopify conversion rate optimization when the goal is a smarter cart or upsell.

How We Build Shopify Apps That Survive API Changes

Shopify releases a new API version every quarter and supports each one for at least twelve months, so an app pinned to an old version eventually stops working. We build on the current stable version, track deprecations and upgrade before the cutoff rather than after something fails.

Got Questions?

Shopify App Development FAQs

It depends on what the app touches. A single Function or theme app extension is a small, fixed-scope job, while an embedded admin app with ERP integration and webhooks is a multi-week build. We send an itemized proposal within 24 hours of a scoping call, pricing each component separately, and we flag running costs such as hosting and API upgrades so nothing surprises you after launch.

Start with the App Store if a well-reviewed app does nearly everything you need for a reasonable fee. Build custom when the logic is unique to your business, when several apps overlap and slow your store down, or when order-based app fees will exceed the cost of a custom build within a year or two. We give you that comparison honestly during scoping.

Mostly. Custom apps built on the Admin API, webhooks, theme app extensions and thank-you or order status page extensions work on the regular paid plans. Two things are limited to Shopify Plus: checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, and custom apps that contain Shopify Functions. Public App Store apps with Functions run on any plan, which can tip the custom-versus-public decision.

The timeline is set in your proposal after scoping. As a rough guide, a single Function, metafield editor or theme extension is days of work, while an embedded admin app with several integrations runs to weeks and is usually delivered in stages, so your team uses the first piece while the next is built. Public apps also need time for Shopify's app review.

It shouldn't if it is built well. Logic delivered as a Shopify Function runs on Shopify's servers, not in the shopper's browser. Storefront features ship as theme app extensions that load only on templates where they are placed, with deferred scripts and no unnecessary libraries. We measure Core Web Vitals before and after release against our sub-2-second load-time target.

Yes. We start with a code audit covering API version, access scopes, webhook handling, hosting and security, then give you fixes ranked by risk. Some inherited apps are worth stabilizing; others are cheaper to rebuild on current APIs, especially if they still depend on REST-only endpoints or old checkout scripts. Post-launch support and maintenance retainers keep the app current afterward.
